The biggest drawbacks of AI

A participant asked me the other day, “What are some of the biggest drawbacks or limitations of AI?”

I thought about it and replied, “two things.”

First, we stop thinking for ourselves.

We get so comfortable letting AI do all the thinking for us that we stop using our own ability to think. And why does that happen?

Because we’re creatures of habit.

The easier something is, the more likely we are to default to it. Look at calculators. Most of us don’t even bother doing simple math in our heads anymore. Not because we can’t, but because we don’t have to!

And that could be happening with AI. The more we rely on it, the less we engage in actual thinking. Over time, we start losing our ability to analyze, discern, and make decisions.

Second, power and control.

Even if training AI models becomes more efficient, let’s be real, it still costs millions to build a large language model.

I don’t have a few million dollars lying around. Unless you do, otherwise, we’re all relying on the big tech to develop these models for us.

And here’s the thing: these companies are not altruistic. They are businesses, and businesses exist to make money.

Now, I’m not saying that’s wrong. But let’s not be naive either.

If the people building AI also control the data, the narratives, and the way information is structured, who’s to say they won’t use it to shape how we think?

So, what do we do?

We flip the script. Instead of seeing AI as a replacement for human intelligence, we see it as an Intelligent Assistant (IA).

That means you don’t let AI replace you, you use it to amplify your strength.

And that starts with one simple question: “What am I uniquely good at?"

For me, my strength is synthesizing information, taking seemingly unrelated ideas, combining them in new and refreshing ways to create new ideas.

So when I use AI, I don’t ask it to think for me.

For example, I might give it three different reports and say, “Summarize the key insights for me.” But then I take over. I analyze it.

I ask myself, does this make sense?

That’s how AI should be used.

So let’s make this clear: Make AI your IA (Intelligent Assistant).

That’s our movement.
